Peanuts (Creative Blog Post)
When the hyper-sensual, hot, and moist surface of the tongue meets the slightly less warm, dry surface of the skin it almost always carries the taste of a jar of lightly salted peanuts; unless, of course, it happens to be the skin of a child who just got done playing a game of touch football on blacktop. In this case, and the weather exceeds 71 degrees with the sun shining, then the taste would probably consist of a jar of the original salted peanuts, in which one of the kids spilled on the blacktop, then discreetly scooped back into the jar before presenting them to you.

Christian - I'm curious as to exaxtly how and why you would be tasting the skin of a child fresh from a game of touch football, but the comparison you make is both funny and evocative. Salty indeed - expecially the last sentence, which really communicates that slight disgust with dirt, sweat and salt.
ReplyDeleteI was more so trying to convey how a child would taste after playing on blacktop as opposed to the actual "who" factor but it's interesting because Chris and Jim said the same thing. Maybe I could clarify a bit but I wasn't really talking about a child at all. I appreciate you feedback though, it's awesome.
DeleteI love the paradox of lightly salted and original salted peanuts in relation to the way your skin tastes after doing athletics. And the specifics of *exactly* 71 degrees bit is funny, too. Still, I think it might be helpful if you qualify *who* you're talking about in this post. It's a bit odd if you're tasting anyone but yourself, you know what I'm saying.

ReplyDeleteI'm with Jim I want to know who specifically this is about. The relationship back to sports is nicely veiled but prevalent nonetheless. This is very strong overall though and the disgusting imagery of the scooped back of peanuts was a god way to finish it.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking you're talking about how "one" would taste. And you're trying to point out that most people taste kinda salty, but that they'd taste super-salty after this specific exertion. I like it. I think it's charming in it's weirdness. The "spilled on the blacktop" line is a little confusing. A sweaty kid tastes like peanuts that have been spilled on the blacktop?
ReplyDeleteThese images are alive, Christian. I'm, like, enticed to read more of your super-charged memories.
Yea! That was the point I was trying to convey in my post, it seemed to confuse the other classmates though. Maybe I put more emphasis on the child than I should have. I really wasn't talking about a child at all though, it was all a metaphor for the taste of skin and peanuts. The line about the sweaty kid tasting like peanuts was my way to tie in the football reference. If the child had been playing football on blacktop then he would have had to have fallen a few times--like the jar of peanuts that he spilled, both resulting in a mix of sweat and blacktop.
DeleteOh, I'm sorry I meant to say "a mix of salt and blacktop".
